What is Obstructive Disease?
Obstructive disease refers to a group of medical conditions that involve the blockage or
narrowing of normal bodily pathways—typically affecting the flow of air, blood, or other fluids.
These conditions can impair organ function and lead to serious health complications if left
untreated.
Common Types of Obstructive Diseases :
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD):- A progressive lung disease that blocks
airflow and makes breathing difficult. Includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) :-
A condition where the airway becomes repeatedly blocked during sleep, leading to interrupted
breathing and poor sleep quality.
- Urinary Tract Obstruction :-
A blockage that impedes the flow of urine through the urinary tract, potentially damaging
the kidneys.
- Bowel Obstruction :-
A blockage in the intestines that prevents food and fluids from passing normally, often
requiring immediate medical intervention.
- Vascular Obstructions :-
Blockages in arteries or veins, such as deep vein thrombosis or arterial embolism, which can
lead to life-threatening complications.
Symptoms May Include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain or pressure
- Swelling or bloating
- Difficulty urinating or passing stools
- Fatigue or dizziness
Diagnosis & Treatment
Diagnosis may involve imaging tests (X-ray, CT scan), blood tests, or endoscopy. Treatment
depends on the type and severity of obstruction and may include medication, lifestyle changes,
or surgical intervention.
