Branchial Cyst

What is a Branchial Cyst?

A branchial cyst, also known as a branchial cleft cyst, is a fluid-filled swelling that forms on the side of the neck. It develops due to remnants of embryonic structures called branchial clefts that fail to disappear during fetal development.

Causes

Branchial cysts are congenital, meaning they are present from birth. They may not be noticeable until later in life when they swell due to infection or fluid buildup.

Common Symptoms
  • A soft, painless lump on the side of the neck
  • Swelling that may move when swallowing or sticking out the tongue
  • Occasional pain or tenderness (if infected)
  • Discharge from the skin (in some cases)
Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually done through physical examination and may be confirmed with:

  • Ultrasound
  • CT scan or MRI
  • Fine needle aspiration (to rule out other conditions)
Treatment Options

The primary treatment for a branchial cyst is surgical removal, especially if the cyst becomes infected or causes discomfort. Antibiotics may be prescribed for infections.

Why Treatment is Important:

Leaving a branchial cyst untreated may lead to repeated infections or complications. Surgery is a safe and effective solution to prevent recurrence.
